Digital education-redefining Indian education

Mission digital has empowered various sections of Indian society and education is one of them. Digital has made it possible to penetrate rural areas and impart quality education to the children residing in the areas that are undeveloped and have no facilities. It all became possible with the improved rate of internet penetration and the usage of smartphones in the country. According to a report released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), Internet users in India are expected to reach 900 million by 2025. The report also says that the users of the Internet in the rural area expected to surpass the urban user base.

Digital education plays a vital role in reviving the education system of India but its real potential was highlighted at the time of the pandemic when schools and colleges had been shut down and online was the only option left for the student to get an education. Students got the opportunity to get uninterrupted education from one of the best teachers while sitting at home. Parents’ engagement in their children’s studies has also increased. Needless to say, digital education has proved to be very beneficial in the current time and will bring significant developments in the future.

Multidimensional initiatives by the government of India to strengthen digital education

India is constantly progressing towards digital education. Quick adoption of technology and digital devices by schools, colleges, and universities helps speed up digitalisation. Also, the government of India’s multidimensional steps towards strengthening digital infrastructure, providing internet connectivity to the remotest areas, designing online education programmes, and various other initiatives impacting digital education drive in a big way. With constant support from the Government of India, the online education market is seeing a major boost in the country. As per the RedSeer Consulting report, by 2025, the online education market in India is expected to reach US$ 5 billion.

The Government of India has launched various programmes and initiatives to ensure learning for all with equity. The government is putting efforts to make education accessible on click of the button to all students at all levels and in all geographies.

Let’s glance at some of the prominent digital education initiatives taken by the government in recent years:

  • National Digital Educational Architecture (NDEAR) – The National Digital Educational Architecture is established by the Indian government to strengthen digital infrastructure and support education planning activities and catalyse the education ecosystem.
  • PMeVIDYA – This programme was launched in 2020 to enhance the accessibility of e-learning for both students and teachers and strengthen digital education in India. Under the PMeVIDYA programme, the top 100 universities were permitted to start online courses and provide better learning opportunities to over 3 crores of higher education students in the country.
  • Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (DIKSHA) – DIKSHA is a national portal for school education introduced by the government in 2017. The portal offers school curriculum-based engaging learning material in more than 18 different Indian languages for everyone including students, teachers, and parents.
  • NISHTHA on DIKSHA – It is a nationwide initiative introduced by the government focusing on the holistic development of teachers by training them to provide quality education to students. Under this programme, lakhs of teachers benefited and completed multiple courses.

Going forward, the government is also focusing on upskilling and making students industry-ready by helping them acquire the skills required for the job. With the help of digitalisation in education, the students are able to enroll in various short-term or long-term courses and hone their skills and knowledge from any institution from anywhere in the world. Moreover, the government’s focus on research and innovation is further strengthening digital education in India. Space technology is being used to leverage satellite communication for providing educational content in digital form. Many more developments are on the way by the government of India to empower digital education.

The influence of digital education will only grow in the future with time. The rising adoption of digital education is not only attracting local private players to invest in e-learning courses but also international players to offer international online courses to the students of India. The students are taking advantage to acquire new skills that will help them apply for career opportunities internationally.

The future of students in India is bright with the speedy growth of digital education. The entire education system is evolving in India and ready to offer quick and quality education to all those children who were earlier having limited or no access to education. Thanks to technology to making it possible and taking education to the nook and corner of India.

The post Top 10 Ways to Improve Quality and Efficiency in Higher Education appeared first on IIRF.

]]>
Higher education is the foundation for the future of our country. It builds the people that are going to be working and leading the country tomorrow. While there are over 50,000 higher education institutions in the country: often criticized for their quality and efficiency. With the impact that these institutions have on people: it is imperative that the education that they provide is of superior quality. A majority of employers complain that students lack basic skills like problem-solving, presentation, critical thinking and even communication. There are several aspects that need to be looked at and improved upon, but here is a list of the things that need to be checked immediately:

  1. Quality of Education: A major issue that decreases the quality of education tremendously is the lack of an updated curriculum. There are government institutions that continue to teach a syllabus that is decades old: and irrelevant to technology and life today. It is important that all institutions keep a check on what is being taught, and update their curriculum frequently.
  2. Use of Technology: Technology is both the present and the future of the country; it is an indispensible entity that can do tremendous things. Students in universities are unaware of the amount of technology, there is in the world because they are busy getting knowledge from books. Universities must introduce new technology amongst students and use it in an efficient manner.
  3. Exchange Programs: Exchange programs are a fairly new and untouched area in the Indian education system. However, exchange programs have the power to transform a student: not only academically but as an individual too. More universities should introduce foreign exchange programs so that students can travel and learn from their experiences and new people.
  4. Access to Education: Only 26% of India’s population decides to pursue a degree after school. The reason for this is inaccessibility to education and the burden of responsibilities. In rural areas, there are no universities, and there are many children who cannot study because they have to work and earn money for the family. A way to promote education and allow children from across the country to study is by introducing distance-learning courses and promoting them amongst the youth.
  5. Interactive Learning: Everyone can read from books, memorize the words and answer the questions on exams. However, true education is beyond the classroom. Through discussions and projects, new methods of teaching and learning need to be introduced in universities, so students have more than just the knowledge from books so that they can develop analytical skills.
  6. Increase Funding: Achieving quality education must be one of the most important goals for the country today. A lot of institutions do not have basic facilities: like working computer labs, and the lack of proper technical lab resources. The government should increase funding in these cases to provide top-quality resources for students. Universities also lack proper infrastructure and accommodation facilities. While these may seem secondary issues, the lack of a proper environment causes a lack in focus; this is another issue that needs to be remedied.
  7. Administering Professors: A majority of the professors in Universities today are on a contract basis, there are also some professors who have been teaching for many years. A lot of these instructors are not updated with the current curriculum. Since these teachers are the ones students will look up to, it is imperative that they are well versed and up-to-date with their subject, this could be done by testing them occasionally.
  8. Promoting Research: Research not only improves the critical and analytical skills of a student, but also promotes the University and the country as a whole. New developments in the country make the entire country better developed. The lack of interest in research studies of students today needs to be improved. Universities must promote research.
  9. Student-to-Teacher Ratio: Classrooms in universities are overcrowded, to say the least. They are filled to the brim, and there is one teacher who teaches this whole lot. It is impossible to remember faces, let alone provide individual attention. The number of students being admitted in a class must be lowered tremendously, for efficient education.
  10. Digital Classrooms: While in-person classes are effective, digital classrooms are the rage in the country. With the availability of recorded lectures, being able to ask and solve doubts at any time. Students have access to multiple resources on the Internet, and tests, quizzes can be returned instantly. This is a realm, that must be explored by Universities in the future.

Law is a massively popular degree, and widely known one too. It is pursued by many as it has a good scope in the future, and impressive salary and innumerable career options. Of course, the process of obtaining an LLB is extremely rigorous: it generally spans into a 5-6 year course. This is because one needs to complete a bachelor’s program before pursuing LLB. Students can also choose to do an integrated course after 12th, there are multiple options available: BA, LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB and so on.

Generally people are only aware of law jobs in the courtroom: lawyers and advocates and judges. However, there are so many other options available for law students. All of these are highly in demand and have an excellent scope, here’s a list of some career options available after the completion of LLB:

  1. Human Rights Lawyer: Human rights is an incredibly fragile topic, one that requires an ardent amount of sensitivity. Human rights is also something that will continue to be an issue in demand twenty years down the line. Human Rights Lawyers advocate for the rights of marginilised communities, these include but are not limited to women’s rights, child’s rights, the LGBTQ+ community. This requires one to get a Juris Doctor (JD) before actively pursuing concerned cases.
  2. Corporate Lawyer: A corporate lawyer is responsible for the legal work of a corporation or company. Companies generally have business partnerships and huge transactions happening day-in and day-out. There are agreements that need to be created and signed almost everyday. A corporate lawyer generally produces these papers and ensures that there are no loopholes. It is also seen that corporate cases very rarely end up in court, this is because a corporate lawyer will solve judicial issues through mediation or arbitration—without a formal hearing in court.
  3. Legal Process Outsourcing: This is a field that is still being explored, and has a lot of scope due to the lack of knowledge that people have in this area. LPO is an alternative career path for law students. Legal outsourcing refers to offshoring—a firm passes on their case to an exterior law firm. This is generally done by countries where it is costlier to perform legal work, and given to countries where it is cheaper: primarily India. The work passed on is generally document-related, patent-related, agency work, legal research and writing and so on.
  4. Legal Researcher: This is a job best suited for people who enjoyed the entire process of obtaining an LLB degree, moreover the people who enjoy reading and researching, and have excellent analysis and critical skills. A Legal Researcher is generally hired by a litigation lawyer for advice on cases. They study past cases and from that understanding, they help in solving present cases. Apart from courtooms legal researchers are also needed in industries and agencies, hospitals, private businesses and even armed forces.
  5. Legal Advisor: A legal advisor, as the name suggests, is someone who provides advice to clients on legal documents, decisions, policies and so on. They can be parts of corporations or work independently. Apart from a law degree, one needs to obtain a certificate from the state in which they practice to become a Legal Advisor.

While these are alternate career paths that a law student can pursue, some common and well-known careers after LLB or LLM are:

  1. Litigation Lawyer: These are the ones we see in movies, with their black robes. These are trial lawyers and handle criminal as well as civil cases in courts. A Litigation Lawyer generally starts off as an assistant to a renowned lawyer, or in a firm. Eventually, Litigators become independent and charge as per their experience.
  2. Judge/Magistrate: A judge is an extremely sought-after career due to the respect, power and position it hold. However, it is just as difficult to become a Judge. They hold judgments and pass verdicts. Becoming a judge happens through nominations and requires several years of experience.
  3. Advocate: An advocate can practice law at District, State, Central and Supreme Courts. This is another extremely sought-after profession. The difference between a lawyer and an advocate is that an advocate is enrolled in the state bar council after having cleared the All India Bar Examination (AIBE).

Of course, today there are lawyers in many other fields: including business, teaching, government services, social works, policy development and so on. The scope is limitless, therefore a degree in Law is in demand today.
